Nampa Balance Therapy

Balance problems can be easy to dismiss at first. For some people, this dizziness or imbalance comes and goes. For others, it starts affecting their everyday activities and makes them less comfortable moving around.

Balance depends on several systems working together, including your inner ear, eyes, muscles, joints, and the part of the brain that processes that information. When one of those systems isn’t working the right way, you might experience dizziness or just changes in how steady you feel.

Pick PT provides specialized balance and vestibular rehabilitation at its Nampa location. Physical therapy for balance issues begins with an evaluation to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether physical therapy will help you through this journey.

Your Balance Depends on More Than Your Inner Ear

The vestibular system is an important part of how your body maintains its balance. It includes structures in the inner ear and the way the brain processes any sensory information related to balance and eye movement.

When that information isn’t being processed properly, you could feel dizzy or unsteady.

Vestibular problems can develop for several reasons: head trauma, inner ear surgery, infection, or prolonged positioning on your back. Conditions affecting the central nervous system can also cause dizziness or balance problems. Or it could be causes related to weakness, age, the neck, or even cardiovascular factors.

Because dizziness can have different causes, Pick PT’s therapists assess patients to determine whether they are appropriate for physical therapy or should be referred for additional medical attention.

What Happens During a Balance Evaluation?

Your first appointment will begin with a conversation about your symptoms: when they started and how they affect your daily activities. Your therapist will also take a look at your walking, posture, coordination, balance, and how your eyes and body respond to movement.

Depending on your symptoms, the evaluation may include some specialized assessments of your vestibular system and your specific eye movements. These assessments can help your therapist better understand what could be causing the dizziness you have been experiencing.

From there, your therapist will create an individualized treatment plan based on your condition and goals. If your symptoms suggest that additional medical evaluation is needed, your therapist can also help determine whether a referral may be appropriate.

How Vestibular Therapy Can Help

Vestibular and balance therapy uses specific exercises to help your body respond more effectively to movement and changes in position. Your treatment may focus on improving eye and head coordination, balance, walking stability, leg strength, or your ability to move safely through different environments.

Depending on your needs, therapy may include:

  • Exercises to improve balance and coordination
  • Activities that help your eyes and brain process movement
  • Training for walking and changing positions
  • Exercises to improve stability when standing or turning
  • Habituation exercises to help reduce dizziness triggered by certain movements
  • A personalized home exercise program

Our goal is to help you move more safely and confidently while making everyday activities easier to manage.

Nampa Balance Therapy FAQ

Is balance therapy only for older adults?

No. Balance problems can affect people of all different ages. This is because balance issues can develop from things like injuries, vestibular disorders, neurological conditions, or surgery. At Pick PT, we treat a range of vestibular and balance-related conditions.

Can physical therapy help with vertigo?

Physical therapy can help with certain causes of vertigo, including BPPV. Pick PT’s therapists are trained in vestibular rehabilitation and can evaluate your symptoms to determine whether physical therapy is appropriate for what you are experiencing.

What if I feel dizzy but don't know why?

You don’t need to have a diagnosis before asking about physical therapy. Your therapist can evaluate your symptoms and balance to determine whether they appear appropriate for vestibular rehabilitation or whether you may need additional medical evaluation.

Can balance problems cause me to avoid normal activities?

They can. If your movement is causing you to feel dizzy or unsteady often, there’s a chance that you naturally start doing less. When you reduce your activity level, that is when it can contribute to weakness or stiff muscles and joints, which can make movement even more difficult.

Will I have exercises to do at home?

Possibly. Pick PT may provide an at-home exercise program as part of vestibular rehabilitation. The exercises are selected based on the individual’s condition and treatment needs.
