Nampa Post Op Therapy

Recovering from surgery can be frustrating, especially when you’re ready to get back to normal but your body isn’t quite there yet. Your doctor may have put restrictions on how much you can move. Instructions from your surgeon may make everyday activities feel different. Post-operative physical therapy gives you a structured way to work through those limitations.

At Pick PT in Nampa, our physical therapists work with patients after orthopedic and other surgical procedures to restore movement and rebuild strength, all while helping to manage pain.

The process can look different for every patient. Your surgery and your current abilities all play a role in determining your rehabilitation plan.

At Pick PT, our Nampa physical therapists specialize in helping patients understand what is causing their pain and creating a plan to help them move better and stronger. Our approach focuses on spine health, movement patterns, strength, and the way your body works as a whole. Our team provides personalized spine care designed to help you regain confidence in your movement.

What Post-Op Physical Therapy Actually Does

Post-operative therapy isn’t simply a list of exercises to complete after surgery. Your physical therapist evaluates how you’re moving and uses that information to determine what needs attention.

Your evaluation may look at:

  • Range of motion: How much movement has been lost?
  • Strength: Which muscles have become weak or need additional support?
  • Pain and swelling: What symptoms are affecting your ability to move?
  • Function: What daily activities are currently difficult?
  • Movement: Are you compensating in ways that could affect your recovery?
  • Surgical precautions: What restrictions has your surgeon given you?

From there, your therapist can develop a treatment plan that fits your surgery and current stage of healing.

Pick PT’s post-surgical rehabilitation may include things like therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, movement training, and education. Your program can change as you regain strength and mobility.

Your First Few Weeks After Surgery

The beginning of recovery can look very different depending on the procedure.

You may start with relatively simple movements designed to restore mobility and begin activating muscles that have become weak. You may also be learning how to walk or do certain everyday movements without putting unnecessary stress on the surgical area. Your surgeon’s restrictions are an important part of this process. Your physical therapist will work within those guidelines and gradually progress your treatment as you’re cleared to do more.

As your recovery continues, treatment can become more challenging.

Your exercises may move from basic movements to strengthening or balance work, and other exercises that relate more closely to what you want to return to doing. That progression is about giving your body the appropriate amount of work as it heals.

Nampa Post-Op Therapy FAQ

When should I start physical therapy after surgery?

The timing depends on the type of surgery you had and your surgeon’s instructions. Some patients begin physical therapy very soon after a procedure, while others need a period of protection or restricted movement first.

Your surgeon will determine when rehabilitation should begin, and your physical therapist will follow those instructions throughout your treatment.

How long will I need post-op physical therapy?

There isn’t a standard number of visits for every surgery. Recovery depends on the procedure, your health and physical condition, how you’re progressing, and what you need to be able to do when rehabilitation is finished.

Your physical therapist can give you a better idea of what your recovery may look like after evaluating you.

Is physical therapy supposed to hurt after surgery?

Some exercises or movements may feel uncomfortable, especially when you’re working to restore your movement or rebuild strength after a procedure. Muscle soreness can also happen as you become more active.

It will be important to tell your therapist about significant or unusual pain. Your treatment can be adjusted based on how you’re responding.

Can I start physical therapy without a doctor's referral?

Idaho allows direct access to physical therapy, so you may be able to schedule an evaluation without a referral. Insurance plans can still have their own requirements, including pre-authorization or a referral. It’s worth checking your insurance coverage before beginning treatment.
