What is a Rotator Cuff, and Why is it Important?
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their associated tendons that surround the shoulder joint. These muscles – the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis – play a crucial role in stabilizing the shoulder and allowing for a wide range of motion, from lifting and rotating your arm to reaching overhead.
Damage to any of these tendons can lead to a tear, which often results in pain, weakness, and difficulty with shoulder movements. Rotator cuff injuries can happen due to acute trauma (like a fall), repetitive strain (common in sports like baseball, tennis, or swimming), or the natural wear and tear that comes with aging.
Understanding Rotator Cuff Tears
Types of Rotator Cuff Tears
- Partial Tears: When the tendon is damaged but not completely severed. This is often the result of overuse or minor injuries that weaken the tendon over time.
- Full-Thickness Tears: Also known as complete tears, where the tendon has been torn entirely through, disconnecting it from the bone. These are usually more severe and can cause significant pain and functional limitations.
Common Symptoms
- Persistent shoulder pain, especially when lifting or lowering the arm
- Weakness in the shoulder, making it difficult to lift objects
- Clicking or popping sounds when moving the arm
- Limited range of motion or stiffness in the shoulder
- Pain that disrupts sleep, particularly when lying on the affected side
