What is KT Tape?

KT Tape, or kinesiology tape, is a therapeutic tool that can help support muscle or joint pain and improve blood flow. It is made of a thin and flexible material that doesn’t restrict movement when wearing it. It aims to reduce tension and swelling by lifting the skin to allow less pressure on the muscles or joints. It is most commonly used on ankles, knees, neck, shoulders, and back.

Is It Safe and Effective?

KT Tape proves to be extremely safe and effective. With proper application and wear, you can see results and also remain comfortable while doing so. To avoid skin irritation or any other issues from happening, ensure:

  • You are replacing the tape every 3-5 days
  • The tape isn’t overstretched or wrinkled on the skin

If you do experience prolonged discomfort with KT Tape, contact a professional to get the treatment you need.

How to Apply It

When dealing with neck pain, there are a couple of different ways to apply it depending on the exact location of the pain. For any application, make sure the skin is clean and prepped and the tape is cut into correctly measured strips.

Y-strip

You can either use one or two strips for this application. If you use one, cut the large strip down the middle, creating a sort of V or Y shape. Place the anchor in the middle of your back (on the upper back). Then extend the two arms on each side of the spine to finish the Y shape.

If you use two strips, place the anchor in the middle of your back (same as previous) and stretch it at an angle so it is placed on one side of the spine. Complete it on the opposite side, placing the anchor right next to or on top of the other.

Vertical and Horizontal Strips

Three strips of tape are used when completing this application. Begin by peeling the backing off one end of the tape to create an anchor point. Place this at the base of the neck on one side of the spine. Peel the rest of the backing and slightly stretch it as you place it vertically down, parallel to the spine. Complete this on the other side of the spine with a separate strip.

For the final strip, rip and peel the backing in the middle section. Slightly stretching the tape and lay it down horizontally on the top of the shoulders. Finish by sticking down both end anchor points.
