What is Balance Therapy?

Balance therapy is an exercise based therapy program, where you will learn all of the exercises that will help you with symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, gaze imbalance, or even feeling unsteady. Many people suffer unnecessarily with vestibular symptoms, because they do not know that there is treatment. We want to help you so that you do not have to deal with these problems in your life. As you take part in this type of therapy, our team will guide you through three different principles that will help you regain your balance. These three different principles are:

Habituation

Habituation exercises are recommended to help with symptoms that come from motion or visual stimuli. Many people become dizzy or experience vertigo from motion or from too much visual stimulation. Sometimes a sudden movement of the head will cause dizziness in people. What these types of exercises will do is they will have the patient repeatedly perform those actions that could make them dizzy, in a slow manner. After repeated instances of these movements, the brain will recognize these movements as normal, and that will help the symptoms of dizziness, as your brain registers these movements as normal.

Gaze Stabilization

Sometimes, items that appear to be shaky or moving around can cause dizziness in people. This can often occur when driving or is a main cause of motion sickness. However, the practice of gaze stabilization will help patients have more control over their eyes when there is head movement so that the objects appear clearly. The basis of this exercise will help people stabilize their eyes even when there is head movement, so that will reduce the likelihood of there being any symptoms of imbalance, dizziness, or vertigo.

Balance Training

Balance training therapy is just as it sounds. It includes exercise that will help you feel steady on your feet. This will help patients in sports, or even in their day-to-day life. Some of the common exercises will include a lot of single legged exercises so that patients can begin to trust themselves on their feet, and do not have to worry about falling when they are going about their life. Balance training is a technique that is used by athletes as well. Balance training will help athletes improve upon their agility, balance, and their overall athletic performance.

Benefits of Balance Therapy

There are so many ways that balance therapy can improve your quality of life. Some of the common benefits include:

Reduces the Chance of Falling

Everyone falls, but as we age, the consequences of falling down become more and more serious. There are many people who are extremely injured after taking a fall. However, as you participate in balance therapy, you will learn and do exercises that will help you learn how to steady yourself so that you feel steady on your feet. Being in balance therapy will help reduce the chance of falling down by reducing spells of dizziness, improving your stability while you are in motion, and improving your neuromuscular condition to help you stay on your feet.

Pain Reduction

If you suffer from a lot of pain, then balance therapy may be a great option to help you as you try to manage your pain. Balance therapy will make sure that all of your muscles in your body are working together to create balance. This will help strengthen your muscles that may not get to work out as often. This may result in improving upon your posture which will result in less back pain.

Improve Athleticism

If you are an athlete that is looking to improve your athletic abilities, then balance therapy may be the answer that you are looking for. Athletes who take the time to participate in balance therapy have shown that they are more agile, are quicker on their feet, and have an overall advantage in their athleticism.

Improves Body Awareness

One of the greatest things about balance therapy is that it teaches you body awareness. Being aware of your body and feeling confident in the capabilities of your body will help you feel more steady and balanced. One of the main components of balance therapy is doing exercises that help you become aware of your body and improve upon what it can do. This will help you be more fully aware of what your body can do.
