What Causes Back Pain?

As mentioned before, back pain is extremely common. But why is it common? What flaws are there in the patterns of our society that cause so many people to deal with back pain on a daily basis?

The back is composed of a diverse and complex collection of muscles, ligaments, disks, tendons, and bones. These parts of our spine all work together to help support our body and allow us to move around. If any of these components of our back stop working correctly or are damaged in some way, it can lead to back pain. Typically damage can be done through strain, structural issues, posture, and chronic or other medical conditions.

Strain

Back pain is often caused by strains, injuries, or tension. Common causes of back pain are:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle tension
  • Damaged disks
  • Injuries, falls, or fractures
  • Strained muscles or ligaments

These types of injuries can be caused through:

  • Lifting items that are too heavy
  • Lifting items improperly
  • Making an awkward or sudden movement
  • Exercising incorrectly
  • Occupational activities

Structural Issues

Another common cause of back pain is structural issues. Whether these structural problems are present from birth or developed from aging or an injury – there is a way to help relieve pain with any structural back issue.

Common structural issues include:

  • Bulging disks
  • Ruptured disks
  • Sciatica (caused by a bulging or herniated disk)
  • Arthritis
  • Oste
  • Kidney problems
  • Abnormal structural curvature of the spine

Posture

Due to the long hours sitting at desks, staring at a computer screen, whether for work or school, posture has become a leading cause of back pain for most people. The hunched sitting posture that is commonly adopted when sitting at a computer can over time, result in back pain. It can also be caused by some activities that we participate in almost every day.

Examples include:

  • Twisting
  • Muscle tension
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Over-stretching
  • Bending awkwardly for long periods of time
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time
  • Straining the neck forward
  • Long periods of time sitting in the car
  • Sleeping on a mattress that doesn’t support your body correctly
  • Pushing, lifting, carrying, or pulling something incorrectly

Chronic and Medical Conditions

Chronic and other medical conditions can also lead to back pain. Some of these examples include:

  • Spinal cancer
  • Spinal infection
  • Other bodily infections
  • Sleep disorders
  • Shingles
  • Pregnancy
  • Aging
  • Obesity or excessive weight
  • Smoking
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Mood disorders or mental illness

How does back pain affect your life?

Any consistent pain in your body will affect your life in some way. Back pain is no different. In fact, because back pain is located in the spinal area – your body’s central support system – it can keep you from doing many of the active things that you love to do. Not only does back pain cause physical suffering, but it can also lead to emotional suffering in a variety of ways.

Work-life

Back pain is a very common reason behind missing work. Whether you work because you love it, because you need to pay the bills, or a little bit of both, it is important to be able to go to work feeling healthy and capable. Back pain can be a hindrance to that. Even on the days that you can make it to work and sit or stand through an eight-hour shift, you still won’t feel 100% if you’re struggling with back pain. This is not ok. You deserve to enjoy the way you feel and feel capable in your work environment.

Depression and Low Self-Esteem

Consistently dealing with pain and the unknown of whether your condition will improve can cause serious emotional problems. Additionally, constant pain can make it very difficult to complete everyday tasks and do the things that you love to do. This can lead to low self-esteem. Many people will suffer from these side effects for years before searching for help with their back pain. At Pick PT, we want you to realize your worth and the worth of your life by helping you find the resources you need to live life moving again.

Social Life

When dealing with back pain, it can be really difficult to connect with people. It can get to the point where the pain is all that you can focus on. This makes it really hard to really listen to and relate with others. This as a result can greatly hinder your ability to make new friends and to build upon existing relationships. You should not let your back pain hinder your ability to make and maintain your relationships. You deserve to build and strengthen your relationship, pain free.
